April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month

Published by Webmaster

For Oral Cancer Awareness Month, we’re recognizing the 50,000 Americans who will be diagnosed in 2020. Oral cancer is a very serious diagnosis to receive; anyone who does must reckon with the fact that the overall five-year survival rate is 60%. Today we will discuss the importance of regular screenings and what applying for disability benefits may include.

Oral Cancer Screenings and Self-Exams

It cannot be overstated how important regular screenings are in the fight against oral cancer. There are improved survival figures for those who receive treatment, and even more so those who were diagnosed early. If you are already seeing your dentist biannually, there is a good chance they are already helping to screen you for oral cancer.

Who is Most at Risk?

However, biannual exams may not be enough, especially for the individuals most at risk. That includes people who drink alcohol, those who have smoked or currently smoke, and those who have contracted HPV (the human papillomavirus). The American Cancer Society advises self-exams to be conducted every month for people at risk of developing oral cancer.

Applying for Disability Benefits

If you have been diagnosed with oral cancer and decide to move forward with a treatment plan, there is already a lot on your plate. Depending on the severity of your situation, it may seem impossible to imagine holding down a full-time job through the process. You may be able to secure support while you are battling and recovering from oral cancer.
